Attendance

Absence or late arrival

If your student is going to be absent or late, please call the school’s main office or nurse. A written excuse is required from caregivers for any student absence or tardiness.

The written note should be sent to school with the student on the day they come back to school and must have the following information:

  1. Student’s full name
  2. Date or dates of the absence or tardiness
  3. Reason(s) for the absence or tardiness
  4. Caregiver’s signature

Early dismissal

If a student needs to leave school early, a note from a caregiver with the reason for leaving must be sent to school the day the student needs to be dismissed early. Please ring the door buzzer when you arrive, and your student will be escorted to the door while you wait outside.

If a note was not sent in for an early pick up, the student’s caregiver will be let into the vestibule to sign out their student. The student will then be escorted to the door.

Attendance expectations

Every student is expected to attend class daily as required by New York state law. Daily attendance fosters both a continuity of learning and personal responsibility, which are both integral to the educational process. Active student participation is an essential part of the school curriculum. Students are required to attend classes every school day unless excused for a valid reason.

Acceptable reasons for absences and/or tardiness are (per district attendance policy):

  1. Personal illness or injury
  2. Death or emergency illness in the immediate family
  3. Religious observance
  4. Required court appearance
  5. Medical and dental appointments
  6. School-sponsored events
  7. College interviews and approved career development and academic counseling
  8. Late arriving bus
  9. Impassable roads or weather making travel unsafe
  10. School-based music lessons
  11. Any other reason as authorized at the discretion of the building principal

Please note that a family vacation is not a legal reason for an absence.
