June 5, 2021: Face mask requirements remain in place

On Saturday, June 5, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter via SchoolMessenger to J-D families and staff.

Good morning Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,

You may have seen a news story yesterday or today about NYS lifting the mask mandate as early as Monday of this coming week.  As is often the case, headlines can be misleading and there is more to this story.

https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2021/06/new-york-to-end-indoor-outdoor-mask-mandates-for-schools-next-week.html

What has happened is that the NYS Department of Health sent a letter to the CDC telling them of their intent to issue new guidance as early as Monday, June 7.  This guidance may significantly change mask protocols for schools.  If the CDC does not object, we could receive new guidance as early as Monday.

School officials must wait for an officially issued NYS Department of Health Guidance document or guidance from our local Department of Health prior to any change in the current mask requirements.

We will provide an update when we receive official guidance. Until that time, all students, staff and visitors must follow the current mask requirement protocols.

Sincerely,

Peter Smith
