Jan. 27, 2021: State lifts local orange and yellow zone designations; voluntary asymptomatic testing will continue
On Jan. 27, Gov. Andrew Cuomo lifted all Onondaga County orange and yellow zone designations, which included the neighborhoods around each Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District school.
Because Moses DeWitt Elementary School was within an orange zone, the district was required to test 10 percent of the school’s in-person population for COVID-19 every two weeks.
The district’s other four schools were located within yellow zones, which also required asymptomatic COVID-19 testing of each school’s in-person population monthly.
“While we are pleased that the state has lifted the zone designations, we intend to continue partnering with the county to conduct voluntary asymptomatic testing within our schools,” Superintendent Peter Smith said. “We agree with the county that asymptomatic COVID-19 testing is an important strategy in mitigating the spread of the virus within our schools.”
