Jan. 19, 2021: Orange zone COVID-19 testing to take place Jan. 22 at Moses DeWitt
On Jan. 19, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter to Moses DeWitt Elementary School families and staff.
Dear Moses DeWitt families and staff,
Onondaga County has notified us that we will hold another school-based testing event Friday, Jan. 22, at Moses DeWitt Elementary School as part of New York state’s orange zone COVID-19 testing requirements for schools. This testing is for Moses DeWitt students in groups A, B, C or D and Moses DeWitt teachers and staff.
On Nov. 23, the neighborhood that includes Moses DeWitt was identified as an orange zone. Schools in an orange zone must test 10 percent of the school’s in-person students and staff bi-weekly for COVID-19, rotating those being tested.
So, we are once again asking for your help in keeping Moses DeWitt open for in-person instruction. If we do not meet these in-person staff and student testing requirements, we will be forced to shift to remote learning for all students.
To avoid that, please register with the county for Friday’s testing event. Please note that testing will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis and the registration link closes once the number of available testing slots have been filled. Students and staff who were tested on Dec. 15 or Jan. 5 are NOT eligible to be tested again at this time. Remote students will not be tested as the zone designation requires only those students and staff members attending school in-person to be tested.
The registration site requires this information be included:
- Moses DeWitt Elementary School
- 201 Jamesville Road
- DeWitt, NY 13214
- School Phone: (315) 445-8370
The tests, which are being provided to the district by the county, will be the BinaxNOW shallow nasal swab, not the more intrusive traditional COVID-19 test. While a parent may accompany his or her child to the testing, we ask that you please avoid parking in the student drop off loop. Results of the test will be available in about 15 minutes. Anyone with a positive test result will be sent home.
At this time, Moses DeWitt will continue to offer in-person instruction following its regular hybrid schedule.
Our goal is to keep everyone healthy while delivering instruction in a safe environment, and I am thankful for your ongoing support and willingness to pivot with us throughout this pandemic. Registration for Friday’s testing is now open, and I will share future test dates as soon as they are available.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me or Moses DeWitt Principal Mary Sylvester.
