Jan. 15, 2021: Four students test positive for COVID-19; asymptomatic school tests yield no positive cases
On Jan. 15, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter to J-D families and staff.
Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,
Today, there were no positive cases of COVID-19 identified as a result of asymptomatic testing completed at Jamesville Elementary and Tecumseh Elementary Schools. We received notification, however, that four students, two students at Jamesville-DeWitt High School and two students at Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School, tested positive for COVID-19.
The two cases at the high school included one student who has not been in school since the holiday break, and the other student was last in school on Jan. 7. The high school will remain open for in-person, hybrid instruction.
The two cases at the middle school included one student who is fully remote and one student who was last in school on Jan. 12. As a result of the positive case at the middle school, a number of teachers are required to quarantine. Therefore, three classrooms of students in the middle school will move to remote learning through Jan. 22. Families in those classrooms have been contacted. All other students and teams of teachers at Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School will be teaching and learning following the in-person, hybrid schedule next week.
The students who tested positive, and any other students and staff members that the county determines were exposed, will not return to school until the county provides clearance for them to do so. We hope you understand that due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about the students who tested positive or about those who may have been exposed.
If you are not contacted by the health department but would still like to schedule a COVID-19 test, please visit this website to find a testing location near you. If your child is exhibiting symptoms or has been out of school due to illness, please refer to the guidance in the New York State Department of Health Pre-K to Grade 12 COVID-19 Toolkit to determine if they can attend school or return to school.
We continue to thoroughly clean and disinfect all our buildings, as well as our buses, in accordance with guidance from the state Department of Health and the CDC. Information on our cleaning and health and safety protocols can be found in the district’s reopening plan.
Please continue to practice and encourage good hand-washing hygiene, wear face masks and practice social distancing.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or your child’s building principal.
