Jan. 4, 2021: Positive COVID-19 cases reported; schools remain open
On Monday, Jan. 4, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter via SchoolMessenger to J-D families and staff.
Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,
Today, Monday, Jan. 4, we were notified that two students—one Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School student and one Tecumseh Elementary School student—tested positive for COVID-19. The students are from the same family, and neither student was in school today. During the holiday recess, 15 students and two staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Contact tracing for each case determined that there were no exposures at school due to the school break and therefore no students or staff will need to quarantine due to these cases.
The students and staff members who tested positive during the break are from the following buildings:
- J-D High School: 6 students, 1 staff member,
- J-D Middle School: 4 students, 1 staff member,
- Jamesville Elementary School: 1 student,
- Moses DeWitt Elementary School: 3 students,
- Tecumseh Elementary School: 1 student.
The students and staff members who tested positive will not return to school until Onondaga County provides clearance for them to do so. We hope you understand that due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about the students or staff who tested positive.
If you are not contacted by the county health department but would still like to schedule a COVID-19 test, please visit this website to find a testing location near you.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms or has been out of school due to illness, please refer to the guidance in the New York State Department of Health Pre-K to Grade 12 COVID-19 Toolkit to determine if they can attend school or return to school.
We continue to thoroughly clean and disinfect all our buildings, as well as our buses, in accordance with guidance from the state Department of Health and the CDC. Information on our cleaning and health and safety protocols can be found in the district’s reopening plan.
Please continue to practice and encourage good hand-washing hygiene, wear face masks and practice social distancing.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or your child’s building principal.
