Dec. 18, 2020: Three students test positive for COVID-19; schools remain open
On Friday, Dec. 18, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter via SchoolMessenger to J-D families and staff.
Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,
We have been notified that three students, one student at Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School, one student at Jamesville Elementary School and one student at Moses DeWitt Elementary School, tested positive for COVID-19. The middle school student and Jamesville Elementary student were last in school on Dec. 11. No students and staff will need to quarantine, and both schools will remain open. As a result of the positive case at Moses DeWitt, students in one classroom will attend remotely until the holiday break, but the rest of the building will remain open for in-person instruction.
The students who tested positive, and any other students and staff members that Onondaga County determines were exposed, will not return to school until the county provides clearance for them to do so. We hope you understand that due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about the students who tested positive or about those who may have been exposed.
If you are not contacted by the health department but would still like to schedule a COVID-19 test, please visit this website to find a testing location near you. If your child is exhibiting symptoms or has been out of school due to illness, please refer to the guidance in the New York State Department of Health Pre-K to Grade 12 COVID-19 Toolkit to determine if they can attend school or return to school.
We continue to thoroughly clean and disinfect all our buildings, as well as our buses, in accordance with guidance from the state Department of Health and the CDC. Information on our cleaning and health and safety protocols can be found in the district’s reopening plan.
Please continue to practice and encourage good hand-washing hygiene, wear face masks and practice social distancing.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or your child’s building principal.
