Nov. 17, 2020: Middle school student surprised by video message

Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School eighth-grade student Zachary Gayanilo loves the weather. Specifically, he loves watching NewsChannel 9’s Chief Meteorologist Jim Teske give his weather forecasts.

Zach knows that while Teske has the weekends off, he will be back on the air making his predictions at 4 p.m. Mondays, which Zach always tells special education teacher Kara Azria when he arrives in her class Monday mornings.

After her students complete a required task, Azria allows them to choose their next activity. For Zach, that choice is typically to watch YouTube videos of Teske’s former weather reports. Zach especially enjoys watching Teske’s reports from the New York State Fair, Azria said.

With her class poised to begin a weather unit, Azria reached out to Teske to see if he would be interested in connecting in some way with Zach.

Teske was on board and recorded a brief video of himself greeting Zach, which Azria used to kick off her weather unit.

As Zach watched the video, his excitement was clear. At one point, he pumped both fists in the air.

“He knew it was for him,” Azria said of Zach. “He was almost in tears watching it.”
