Nov. 6, 2020: Tecumseh staff member tests positive for COVID-19; school to remain open
On Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the following letter to J-D families and staff.
Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,
Today, Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, we were notified that a staff member at Tecumseh Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19. The staff member was in school on Monday, Nov. 2, and Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The health department is in the process of identifying and notifying individuals who were in close contact with the staff member. Though a number of staff will be required to quarantine, no students are impacted. At this time we expect that Tecumseh will remain open.
The staff member who tested positive, and any other faculty and staff that the county determines were exposed, will not return to school until the county provides clearance for them to do so. We hope you understand that due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about the staff member who tested positive or about those who may have been exposed.
If you are not contacted by the health department but would still like to schedule a COVID-19 test, please visit this website to find a testing location near you. If your child is exhibiting symptoms or has been out of school due to illness, please refer to the guidance in the New York State Department of Health Pre-K to Grade 12 COVID-19 Toolkit to determine if they can attend school or return to school.
Since the start of the school year, we have been thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting all our buildings, as well as our buses, in accordance with guidance from the state Department of Health and the CDC. We will continue to do so on a daily basis. More information on our cleaning and health and safety protocols can be found in the district’s reopening plan.
Please continue to practice and encourage good hand-washing hygiene, wear face masks and practice social distancing. If you or a family member start to exhibit symptoms of the virus, please reach out to your physician and inform the appropriate school nurse.
We appreciate your patience and flexibility while we work to protect the health, welfare and safety of our students and staff while complying with any government orders and guidance.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or Tecumseh Elementary School Principal Tokinma Killins.
