Oct. 21, 2020: Two high school students test positive for COVID-19; high school shifts to remote learning for Oct. 22 and 23

On Oct. 21, 2020, Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Superintendent Peter Smith sent the letter below to families and staff.

Dear Jamesville-DeWitt families and staff,

On Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020, the Onondaga County Health Department notified the school district that two Jamesville-DeWitt High School students from the same household tested positive for COVID-19.

One student was last in school on Oct. 9, and the other was last in school on Oct. 16.

The health department is in the process of identifying and notifying individuals who were in close contact with the students within two days from the onset of the students’ symptoms. Because the county has determined that at least six teachers will be required to quarantine, the high school only will shift to remote learning for all students on Thursday, Oct. 22 and Friday, Oct. 23.

The students who tested positive, and any other students, faculty and staff that the county determines were exposed, will not return to school until the county provides clearance for them to do so. We hope you understand that due to privacy laws, we cannot provide any additional information about the students who tested positive or about those who may have been exposed.

If you are not contacted by the health department but would still like to schedule a COVID-19 test, please visit this website to find a testing location near you. If your child is exhibiting symptoms or has been out of school due to illness, please refer to the guidance in the New York State Department of Health Pre-K to Grade 12 COVID-19 Toolkit to determine if they can attend school or return to school.

Since the start of the school year, we have been thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting all our buildings, as well as our buses, in accordance with guidance from the state Department of Health and the CDC. We will continue to do so on a daily basis. More information on our cleaning and health and safety protocols can be found in the district’s reopening plan.

Please continue to practice and encourage good hand-washing hygiene, wear face masks and practice social distancing. If you or a family member start to exhibit symptoms of the virus, please reach out to your physician and inform the appropriate school nurse.

We know this shift to remote instruction may pose a challenge for some families, and we appreciate your patience and flexibility while we work to protect the health, welfare and safety of our students and staff while complying with any government orders and guidance.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or J-D High School Principal Paul Gasparini.
