Numbers to 10


Throughout this module students will:
  • write numbers 0 to 20.
  • count objects and connect counting with the pairing of objects.
  • classify objects as "exactly the same" or "the same but..."
  • learn the concept of zero


Terminology Definition Illustration
Match Group items that are the same or that have the same given attribute; one-to-one correspondence
Sort Group objects according to a particular attribute
Hidden partners Embedded numbers
Counting path With reference to order of count
Number story Stories with add to or take from situations; a word problem e.g.,
Zero No objects; a cardinal number indicating the absence of all units
Number sentence  Represents an equation that includes numbers and operation symbols like addition and subtraction  e.g.,
5-group grouping numbers in 5's
Rows/columns  Row: Objects, people, numbers, etc. in a horizontal line; Column: an arrangement of figures, one above the other
Number path A pictorial count model; each square represents an object that can be counted; helps child see distinct units
