Module Two
Unit Conversions

Throughout this module students will:
  • express metric length, mass, and capacity measurements in terms of a smaller unit
  • model and solve addition and subtraction word problems
  • know and relate metric units to place value units in order to express measurements in different units
  • use addition and subtraction to solve multi-step word problems involving length, mass, and capacity


Terminology Definition Illustration
Capacity The maximum amount that something can contain
Convert To express a measurement in a different unit e.g., 
Kilometer A metric unit of length equal to 1,000 meters; abreviated km
Mass The measure of the amount of matter in an object; usually measured by comparing with an object of known mass
Milliliter A metric unit of capacity; 1,000 milliliters = 1 liter; abreviated mL
Mixed units Unit: A reference value of a quantity used to measure or compare other values of the same quantity.  Mixed unit e.g., 3 m 43 cm e.g.,
