Superintendent Dr. Woodcock and Board of Education President Sharon Archer address board meeting community comment changes

Dear Jamesville-DeWitt School Community,

We are writing to inform you of an unfortunate incident that occurred during Monday’s regular Board of Education meeting. As a district committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment, we are disappointed to report that inappropriate behavior, including participants renaming themselves racist names, took place by a few attendees virtually via Zoom. We are working with Town of DeWitt police to fully investigate the situation.

This type of conduct is not acceptable and will not be tolerated at any time. Our board meetings are a place for community input, and it is critical that all members of the public adhere to respectful standards when participating.

With the conclusion of all COVID-related public health protocols, the Board of Education has determined that the need for remote commenting via Zoom is no longer necessary. Moving forward, all Board of Education meetings will continue to be live-streamed for community viewing, but public comment must be made in person at the meetings. This decision reflects our goal to promote accountability and encourage meaningful, face-to-face dialogue between our board and the community we serve.

Please know that members of our Board of Education and administrative team remain committed to being accessible to our families, students, and stakeholders. We are available and willing to meet with community members at any time to listen to concerns, answer questions, and work together toward positive solutions.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support as we strive to uphold the values of respect, civility, and open communication in all aspects of our school district.

Sincerely,

Sharon Archer
Jamesville-DeWitt Board of Education President
