Students participate in Albany PRHYLI conference

Some J-D High School students recently immersed themselves in the New York state legislative process. Four students were invited to participate in the annual Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI) Albany Weekend Conference. It took place the weekend of April 17-20.

Stephanie Alfonso, Sara Skewes, Sneyder Jumbo Pintado, and Arturo González Sánchez were chosen to represent the Syracuse Delegation for demonstrating exceptional leadership, public speaking, and collaborative skills.

The conference provided students with the opportunity to network with more than 300 students from across the state. They participated in various workshops and mock assemblies. They were even able to debate bills on the assembly floor.

The conference also provided opportunities for awards and scholarships. Congratulations to Sara Skewes for winning a scholarship essay contest.

The institute was created more than 30 years ago. It’s overall purpose is to empower students and develop leadership skills by providing opportunities for Hispanic students to interact with positive role models such as elected officials, educators, and business leaders.
