State approves district’s new Seal of Civic Readiness program

Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District students have a new opportunity to be recognized upon graduation for achieving a high level of proficiency in terms of civic knowledge, skills, mindset and experiences.

The New York State Education Department approved in July the district’s application to offer the state Seal of Civic Readiness (SoCR), a distinction that appears on a student’s high school transcript and diploma for those successfully completing the program.

To obtain the SoCR, a student must complete all requirements for a New York state local or Regents diploma and accrue a certain number of points earned through such activities as completing a service-learning project of a minimum of 25 hours, earning credit in an elective course that promotes civic engagement, extracurricular participation or a work-based learning experience related to civics.

“The Seal of Civic Readiness program aligns with the district’s mission, core beliefs, strategic plan and our work around Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education,” said Nate Franz, J-D’s assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and equity. “Offering this Seal will allow us to tangibly connect our students to society and give them a greater understanding of history and current issues locally, nationally and globally.”

Students and their family members who would like more information about the Seal should contact the students’ school counselor.

As the Seal becomes embedded in the course of study at the middle and high school, administrators will seek opportunities for engagement from local businesses and community partner groups and organizations as well as civic leaders.
