J-D Middle School seventh-graders recently took their learning outdoors as part of their Ecosystems unit with science teacher Anna Endreny. In early October, students joined volunteers from Upstate Freshwater Institute, Project Watershed, and SUNY-ESF to study Butternut Creek at Fiddlers Green in Jamesville.
Students rotated through three hands-on learning stations which focused on water quality testing, measuring current, and studying aquatic organisms. These interactive experiences allowed students to apply classroom knowledge directly to real-world environmental science.
The data the students collected will be used by the Upstate Freshwater Institute and will contribute to broader stream monitoring efforts across the Great Lakes Region.
The results are in: the creek is considered clean!
