J-DMS student competes in Scripps National Spelling Bee

We’re proud to share that J-D Middle School eighth-grader Simran Sanders had a great run in the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee! She made it to the final quarterfinal round Wednesday, finishing in 58th place.

“Simran has been a spelling bee force representing Central New York on a national level for the past three years. I can speak for the entire school when I say Simran’s dedication and work ethic serves as a fantastic example for all members of Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School and the community as a whole,” shared Principal Andy Eldridge.

Simran worked hard to make it to the national stage. She had to win the Post-Standard | syracuse.com Spelling Bee in March, defending her title as the regional champion from Central New York. She was among 243 students representing all 50 states who traveled to Washington, D.C. for the 100th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.

On Tuesday, Simran correctly spelled “pierrot” and gave the correct meaning for “pedigree.” Simran was among 183 students who qualified for the written test in the third round that night. Students were given 40 questions, a combination of 28 spelling words and 12 vocabulary words. She was among 99 spellers who scored high enough to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Simran made it through the first two rounds of the quarterfinals, correctly spelling “lampoonery” and defining “abyss.” She finished her run in the third round after misspelling the word “arnica.”

The championship finals are scheduled for Thursday evening.

Congrats Simran, the school community is so proud of your hard work!
