J-D Middle School students earn multiple awards at Future City competition

Sixth-graders Siobhan Yung, Olivia Zhang, and Pramiti Adhikari recently represented J-D Middle School at the Future City Middle School Regional Competition in Albany, earning multiple top awards for their project, Shanghai 2125.

Future City is one of the most prestigious international STEM competitions for middle school students. Teams are challenged to imagine and design a city set 100 years in the future using real-world engineering principles. This year, students were asked to design a city that eliminates food waste from farm to table while keeping citizens healthy and safe.

The J-D project, Shanghai 2125, presented a future city that addressed the farm-to-table challenge through innovative transportation systems, renewable energy integration, and strategies to reduce food loss while supporting public health and safety.

This year’s regional competition was judged by more than 40 professionals, including engineers, city planners, public policy experts, and government officials. They evaluated teams on how effectively they integrated engineering design, sustainability, transportation systems, public policy, and project planning into a cohesive solution.

Shanghai 2125 earned the following awards:

    • Rookie of the Year
    • Best Utilization of a Transportation System
    • Most Innovative Use of Renewable Energy
    • Best Project Plan Award
    • Second Place Overall

The team is eager to bring their model back to school and share their work with classmates through a presentation or demonstration. They hope to raise awareness of engineering, sustainability, and food systems while inspiring interest in STEM learning.

Congratulations Siobhan, Olivia, and Pramiti!
