J-D Middle School eighth graders are making their mark in the arts! Our students recently earned 10 Central New York Scholastic Art Awards. This is one of the largest and longest-running student art competitions in the country.
The CNY region includes 14 counties and nearly 400 eligible schools. Each year, artwork from 80 to 100 schools is reviewed by more than 50 professional artists, educators, and photographers. Out of nearly 5,000 entries, only 29% were selected for exhibition. All entries are considered regionally for Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention awards. Entries that win a Gold Key are automatically considered for national awards, including Gold Medal, Silver Medal, and scholarship awards.
The following students were recognized regionally for their outstanding artwork:
-
- Juliette Varnowatts, (1) Gold Key and (2) Honorable Mentions – Photography
- Bonnie Lou, Silver Key – Painting
- Luke Moser, Silver Key – Painting
- Joy Appiah, Silver Key – Ceramics & Glass
- Natalie Bird, Honorable Mention – Illustration
- Abigail Campbell, Honorable Mention – Photography
- Eleanor Johnson, Honorable Mention – Mixed Media
- Mayde Anastasio, Honorable Mention – Photography
Their success reflects not only their creativity and dedication, but also the support and guidance of their art teachers: Mrs. Pudney, Mrs. Sabine, and Ms. Ebner.
Award-winning artwork will be on public display from Jan. 14 through Feb. 27 at the Whitney Applied Technology Center at Onondaga Community College. The exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
