J-D alum honors high school teacher during Merrill Presidential Scholars program

A Jamesville-DeWitt alum has been named a Cornell University Merrill Presidential Scholar. The honor celebrates the school’s top 43 graduates. Besides outstanding scholastic achievement, Merrill Scholars are also recognized for their strong leadership and desire to positively impact the world beyond Cornell.

Each scholar is asked to recognize a high school and Cornell mentor who had the greatest impact on their early education and college experience. J-D alum Somil Aggarwal invited J-D High School Computer Science Teacher Jay Lang to attend. Aggarwal is graduating from the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science.

Lang was invited to Cornell, all expenses paid, for the two-day program in May. It consisted of an informal dinner, an academic program led by Cornell faculty, and a celebratory luncheon. Lang says he really enjoyed the experience.

Congratulations to Aggarwal on this outstanding achievement! Also, special thanks to Jay Lang for providing such a memorable and impactful learning experience for our students. This is a wonderful example of the district’s commitment to excellence in preparing students to achieve and succeed. Together, we are J-D.

Cornell University also honors these mentors through scholarships for students. STAR or Special Teachers Are Recognized scholarships celebrate the influential role high school teachers play in the success of Cornell Merrill Presidential Scholars. Scholarships will be named in honor of the outstanding teachers recognized by the Merrill Presidential Scholars and will be awarded to Cornell students with financial need from the scholar’s high school or hometown.
