High school fire sensor triggered by dust

At approximately 9:35 a.m., J-D High School had an unexpected fire alarm. The alarm was triggered in the school’s woodshop, which was determined to be due to dust.

Due to the inclement weather, students were outside for approximately eight minutes before being allowed to re-enter the building. Students were supervised in the main gymnasium for about five minutes until the DeWitt Fire Department cleared the school.

About 10 minutes later, the same woodshop fire alarm sensor was again triggered by dust. Students exited the building and were again directed to the main gym where they waited for about 30 minutes before the fire department cleared the building.

The district’s maintenance team is working with the fire department and the construction management team to determine how to prevent the woodshop sensors from alerting when there is no fire.
