The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District recently received results for follow-up water testing after some outlets tested above the threshold for lead in June. Results show there are still some outlets testing above the action level. The outlets have been clearly labeled to indicate that they are not to be used for consumption. The Facilities Department will replace faucet hardware as the next step to remediate the issue. Another round of testing will take place to ensure outlets meet level requirements. The district is still aiming to resolve the issue prior to the start of the school year.
According to New York state law, school districts are required every three years to complete a round of lead testing of all water outlets used for drinking and cooking, unless the state Commissioner of Health requires testing sooner. The samples are sent to a state approved lab for analysis.
In 2021, the state lowered the established action level of 15 micrograms of lead per liter, typically referred to as “parts per billion (ppb),” to 5 ppb for tests taking place beginning in the 2022-23 school year and after.
