Board to host Virtual Smartphone Policy Public Forum on May 28

The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Board of Education invites families, students, staff, and community members to attend a Virtual Smartphone Policy Public Forum on Wednesday, May 28 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The forum comes as administrators and the board review a state requirement to limit smartphone use in schools which is expected to be enacted prior to the 2025-26 school year. They will use stakeholder input collected during the public forum and a recent ThoughtExchange survey to help guide decisions and ensure that any policy changes are beneficial for all involved.

The public forum will include:

    • Welcome/Introductions/Purpose: Dr. Sharon Archer, Vice President, Board of Education
    • Background/Current Practice/New Legislation: Dr. Peter Smith, Superintendent
    • Local school leader reflections: Mr. John Courain, Principal, Durgee Jr. High School, Baldwinsville Central School District (15 minutes)
    • ThoughtExchange results: Dr. Sharon Archer (680 people participated)
    • Small Group Breakout Sessions: Facilitated by Board of Education members and J-D administrators
    • Wrap Up/Next Steps: Dr. Sharon Archer
