Board conducts first reading of distraction-free schools policy; district works with stakeholders to answer questions

The Jamesville-DeWitt Central School District Board of Education conducted a first reading of Policy 7316 – Use of Internet-Enabled Devices During the School Day during Monday’s regular meeting. The second reading and adoption is expected to take place on Monday, August 25.

District officials crafted the policy and implementation plans in accordance with state law, while using vital community feedback gathered during the 2024-25 school year from stakeholder groups, including staff, students and families. The ban takes effect this September and Jamesville-DeWitt is prepared to carry out a consistent policy across all five of its school buildings this fall.

The district shared policy implementation information with staff, students, and families on Thursday, July 31. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) webpage is available on the district website to help ease the transition and will be updated as additional information becomes available.

“We’ve already received some really thoughtful questions about how this policy will impact students and conversations have been productive. We understand this will be a big adjustment, especially for our high school students. We will continue to work together to ensure they feel supported and well informed about the policy,” said Superintendent Darcy Woodcock. “I remain confident that a consistent approach across all schools will help our students stay focused on academic growth, strengthen their social skills, and build strong relationships with both teachers and peers.”
