Finding fun ways to teach foundational literacy skills in Kindergarten

The Tecumseh Elementary School Kindergarten Team used some creative strategies to teach foundational literacy skills this school year. They’ve used AlphaFriends, a friendly visual, to teach students letters and the sounds they make. The lessons culminated in a special ABC Fashion Show for families on Wednesday, April 30.

Students were each assigned a letter to represent. With help from family at home, they decorated paper vests. The students took turns showing off their hard work and creativity while strutting down a red carpet and striking a pose. There was even an MC who introduced them!

“A very special thank you for the time and creativity you put into making the vests for our show. Each one was unique and full of personality, just like our amazing students,” shared The Kindergarten Team.

Students also performed the alphabet song in sign language and sang, “Who Let the Letters Out?” and “Lettercise.” The classes also took turns introducing AlphaFriends, A-Z.

“We love that our students took to the stage to showcase what they have learned. Meeting our AlphaFriends provided a foundation for our students to now be able to read and spell words,” shared The Kindergarten Team. “It has been a joy to learn and grow together this year.”

Each student was given a certificate and a special treat after the show.
