Welcome JES families to the new Art Room Homepage! 
With Curriculum Nights on our calendar for this week and last I have decided to post a yearly art overview for our various grades of artists here at Jamesville.  Please read below and see what your student will be learning about during the 2017-2018 school year.




Jamesville Elementary Art Yearly Overview

~Kindergarten~

In Art Class this year, Kindergarteners will learn all about the language of art and
the many fun materials we can use to create art!...

Language of Art
-Line: learn the various types of line including straight, curved, zigzag, castle, thick...
-Shape & Form: learning to recognize and create circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, cubes, cylinders
-Color: learning about primary and secondary colors and exploring color mixing
-Texture: Learn to describe the way something feels (soft, smooth, rough, fuzzy…)
-Value: the lightness and darkness of a color

Materials to Create Art
-Using tempera paint with both brushes and other mark-making tools
-Exploring resist techniques with watercolor paint, crayons and oil pastels
-Develop the process of creating art using pencils, crayons, and markers
-Exploring clay through manipulation, creating pinch pots
-Further develop cutting and gluing skills through collage projects

~1st Grade~

In Art Class this year, First Graders will further develop their knowledge and
use of the language of art along with the many fun materials we can use to create art!...

Language of Art
Line: review and master types of line including straight, curved, zigzag, thick…
Shape & Form:  Comparing and contrasting 2D vs. 3D shapes and forms
Color: learning about primary and secondary colors and exploring color mixing
Texture: Learn to describe the way something feels (soft, smooth, rough, fuzzy…)
Value: the lightness and darkness of a color

Materials to Create Art
-Developing brush skills and having control over marks while using tempera paint
-Exploring resist techniques with watercolor paint, crayons and oil pastels
-Further develop the process of creating art using pencils, crayons, and markers - planning their design in pencil first, allowing for ideas to develop as students are able to add and erase elements of their work
-Manipulating clay to create pinch pots, now with carefully attached features
-Further develop cutting and gluing skills through collage projects

~2nd Grade~

Second Graders will be taking a virtual trip around the United States in Art this year, learning about the rich artwork that
has been produced throughout its history, while also creating artwork of their own.  On our virtual trip this year, students will explore...

Places we are visiting soon...
-Floating on the Erie Canal; Ellis Island and New York City!
-Four Corners
-Hawaii

Materials and Concepts to Explore:
-Further develop the artistic process of creating work
-Clay - coil pots
-Reinforcing the Language of Art
-Paper folding and creations
-Painting and drawing using various techniques
-Collage and Mixed Media exploration
-Critical review of American artworks
-Pop Art Movement

~3rd Grade~

Third Graders will be be inspired to create during our virtual Trip Around the World in Art, learning about rich cultures and
artworks that have been produced throughout history...

Places to Visit
-North America - Syracuse, New York City, the Wild West, Hawaii and Mexico
-South America - the Amazon, and Rio de Janeiro
-Europe - Greece, The Louvre, Italy and France
-Asia - China, Japan, and many more!
-Australia (a look at Aboriginal art)
-Africa - Egypt (hieroglyphics)
-The Caribbean (treasure maps and surprise encounters with pirates!)

Materials and Concepts to Explore
-Further develop the artistic process of creating work
-Clay - vessel making using coil and slab techniques
-Sculptures using wire and paper mache
-Art vocabulary strengthened for various techniques
-Watercolor paints and Oil Pastel Resist
-Architecture and the history of its connection to art

~4th Grade~

In Art Class this year, Fourth Graders will work towards mastering their knowledge and use of the language of art,
refine their artistic skills, and learn how to work with more 3D materials!...

Language of Art
-Line: using line to suggest movement
     -Using line to create visual texture
-Shape & Form: understanding how a complex shape can be drawn be breaking the object down into a series of steps consisting of simpler shapes: Showing movement using 2D shapes and 3D forms
-Color: Further mastering color mixing: Differentiating between warm and cool colors
-Texture: Learn to create actual and visual texture
-Value: learn to create a value scale with tints and shades: Use value to create the illusion of three-dimensionality  
-Space: learning drawing techniques that create the illusion of space and depth  

Materials & Techniques
-Further developing drawing, colored pencil and paint techniques
-Creating functional pottery through various hand-building techniques
-Creating 3-dimensional works of art using materials such as wire, plaster, paper-mache…
