Exploring Measurement with Multiplication
Overview 

Throughout this module students will:
  • create conversion tables for length, weight, and capacity units
  • create conversion tables for units of time
  • solve multiplicative comparison word problems using conversion tables
  • create and determine the area of composite figures

Vocabulary

Terminology Definition Illustration
Customary system of measurement Measurement system commonly used in the United States for measuring length, capacity, and weight that includes such units as yards, gallons, and pounds         
     
Cup (c) Customary unit of measure for liquid volume; 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces         
     
Gallon (gal) Customary unit of measure for liquid volume; 1 gallon = 4 quarts
     
Metric system of measurement Base ten system of measurement used internationally that includes such units as meters, kilograms, and liters          
     
Ounce (oz) Customary unit of measure for weight equal to one sixteenth of a pound; 16 ounces = 1 pound
     
Pint (pt) Customary unit of measure for liquid volume; 1 pint = 2 cups            
     
Pound (lb) Customary unit of measure for weight; 1 pound = 16 ounces
     
Quart (qt) Custormary unit of measure for liquid volume; 1 quart = 2 pints or 1 quart = 4 cups
