Decimal Fractions

Overview

Throughout this module students will:
  • explore decimal numbers via their relationship to decimal fractions
  • express a given quantity in both fraction and decimal forms
  • use understanding of fractions to explore tenths and hundredths
  • write statements of equivalence in unit, fraction, and decimal forms
  • compare decimal numbers
  • solve word problems involving money

Vocabulary
 
Terminology Definition Illustration
Decimal number Number written using place value units that are powers of 10
     
Decimal expanded form Expanded notation represents a number as the sum of each of its digits multiplied by their place value e.g.,
     
Decimal fraction Fraction with a denominator of 10 or a power of 10
     
Decimal point Period used to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a decimal number
     
Expanded form A way to write numbers that shows the place value of each digit
     
Fraction Numerical quantity that is not a whole number;  a way to describe a part of a whole or a part of a group by using equal parts
     
Fraction expanded form Expanded notation represents a number as the sum of each of its digits multiplied by their place value e.g.,
     
Hundredth Place value unit such that 100 hundredths equals 1 one
     
Tenth Place value unit such that 10 tenths equals 1 one
