Foundations of Multiplication and Division
 

 
Overview

Throughout this module, students will: 
  • determine whether a group of objects has an odd or even number of members
  • use addition to find the total number of objects in an array with up to 5 rows and 5 columns
  • write equations to show array totals as the sum of equal addends
  • divide rectangles into equal rows and columns
Vocabulary
Terminology Definition Illustration
Array Arrangment of objects in equal rows and columns    
     
Columns The vertical groups in a rectangular array
     
Even number A number with a digit of 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 in the ones place. Can be shown as 2 equal parts.
     
Odd number A number with a digit of 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 in the ones place. Cannot be shown as 2 equal parts. 
     
Repeated addition Adding equal groups of objects to find the total number of objects. 
     
Rows The horizontal groups in a rectangular array
     
Tessellation A pattern on a plane with geometric shapes with no overlaps and no gaps. Also referred to as tiling. 
     
Whole number Whole numbers are 0 and all the counting numbers.
