with Word Problems to 100


Overview

Throughout this module, students will: 
  • fluently add and subtract 1, 10, and 100 (ex. 56+100=) 
  • build fluency with two-digit addition and subtraction within 100
  • add up to four two-digit numbers
  • apply knowledge of place value strategies to vertical notation
  • develop conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers within 200
Vocabulary
Terminology Definition Illustration
Equation A number sentence with an equal sign.
The amount on one side of the equal sign has the
same value as the amount on the other side. 
     
Minuend  The quantity or number from which another quantity or number is to be subtracted. 
  65-41= 24

 
     
Subtrahend The quantity or number to be subtracted from another.  65-41= 24
     
Compensation A strategy that involves adjusting one number to a tens number and then adjusting the other number to keep a balance. 
     
Expression  A mathematical phrase with no equal sign.  62-41
     
Less Than Can be used to describe an action to mentally subtract 1, 10, or 100 from a given number.
     
More Than Can be used to describe an action to mentally add 1, 10 or 100 from a given number. 
     
Making Ten A strategy that uses combinations of numbers that add up to ten.
